A delivery driver caught going at double the speed limit through a Highland village was attempting to meet “tight deadlines”, a court has heard.

Craig Taylor’s vehicle was stopped by police after he was clocked doing 60mph along a 30mph stretch of the A9 at Stafford Street in Helmsdale.

He admitted a single charge of careless driving at Tain Sheriff Court.

Taylor, 36, was not personally present at the hearing, where solicitor Rory Gowans entered a guilty plea on his behalf relating to the incident, which took place on November 5 of last year.

Delivery driver drove at double the speed limit

Fiscal depute Naomi Duffy-Welsh said: “Police were carrying out static speed check at the locus in an unmarked police vehicle.

“They saw a vehicle travelling south which passed their position. The vehicle was travelling well in excess of the 30mph speed limit – the vehicle was travelling at 60mph.”

Officers then looked for a safe place to stop the white Peugeot and Taylor was later charged.

Mr Gowans said his client had been hurrying to conform with the demands of his employment on the day in question.

He said: “He was working at this time as a delivery driver and trying to meet tight deadlines in an unfamiliar part of the world to him.”

However, despite his best efforts, he had seemingly not impressed his employers, with Mr Gowans explaining: “Suffice to say the job was short-lived.”

The defence solicitor told Sheriff Gary Aitken that the now-unemployed Taylor hoped to be allowed to keep his licence so he could continue giving his son lifts to his work.

Sheriff Aitken fined Taylor, of Bute Drive, Perth, £350 and handed him six penalty points.
