The West Highland Line might be famous as one of the best rail journeys in the world and for its links with Harry Potter and the Hogwarts Express.
But campaigners more could be done to create better links between the iconic line and the community.
They have flagged off a drive to set up a community rail partnership in Lochaber to push forward changes along the line Crianlarich via Fort William to Mallaig.
Anyone interested in becoming involved is invited to attend a drop-in information session, followed by a public meeting to discuss the plans next week.
Councillor Andrew Baxter, Fort William and Ardnamurchan, said: “We all know the West Highland Line is an iconic railway journey and has been voted the best railway journey in the world, on several occasions, by readers of the travel magazine Wanderlust.
“With its connection to the Harry Potter films, it attracts people from around the world who want to travel across the Glenfinnan Viaduct.
“Any plans for the local community to make it even better to and to improve promotion of the line are welcome.”
He pointed out that, elsewhere in the country, successful partnerships have been instrumental in achieving spectacular increases in use of rail through innovative marketing, improved services and better station facilities.
And he explained that the work of these partnerships includes improving bus links to stations, developing walking and cycling routes, bringing station buildings back to life, art and education projects and organising special events which promote the railway and its relevance to the community.
The drop-in session will be held at the Alexandra Hotel in Fort William next Monday from 2pm to 5pm.
The public meeting in the Council Chamber, Lochaber House, Fort William, will be held from 5.30pm to 7pm on the same day.
Mr Baxter explained that the event, which will be hosted by Lochaber Transport Forum, will focus on the proposals for a partnership in Lochaber and identify members of the community who would be willing to join a partnership steering group.
He said: “The aim of the group is to develop a partnership application for submission to Transport Scotland.”
