Highland Council's work on Suds ponds are among the projects to be nominated

Five Highland projects have been nominated for prestigious council awards.

It is the first time that Highland Council’s work has been recognised in all of the categories of the Cosla Excellence Awards, which celebrate innovative work in local authorities.

All of the projects will win bronze awards and have been “long leeted” for the top prizes which will be announced later this month.

The council’s work surveying suds ponds in the Inverness area is one of the projects to be recognised, as is the system used for providing information about school closures.

Also nominated is the Handyperson Telecare Project, the council’s programme of alternatives for placing young people in care outwith the Highlands and tackling inequalities for young carers.

Highland Council leader Councillor Margaret Davidson said: “This has been Highland Council’s most successful year ever in the history of the authority entering the Cosla Excellence Awards with 14 entries out of the maximum 15 allowed and five projects receiving bronze awards across each category.

“Congratulations to all the council staff and individuals who have worked so hard and can see the results of their endeavours recognised. With fingers crossed we await the judges’ final decisions in January when we will hear if the projects achieve Silver or Gold level awards.”
