20mph is the way to go in Garmouth

A Moray councillor has called for the introduction of a 20mph speed limit in the Garmouth area.

Labour member for Fochabers and Lhanbryde Sean Morton first raised the issue about speed limits in 2012.

However, last October members of the council’s economic development and infrastructure committee rejected plans to introduce a 20mph limit at Garmouth, arguing it was not necessary as the roads were so narrow motorists already drove slowly.

Moray Council is set to reconsider the measures at a committee meeting today.

Mr Morton said: “This is something that I’m determined to see happen for Garmouth and Kingston residents. So many people contact me about it.

“They have been so passionate that they started campaigning for a 20mph limit online over a year ago – which I supported.

“In 2013 we were very close to achieving that goal but members of the economic development and infrastructure committee decided not to support the plan, which surprised me.

“The people who have contacted me believe that twenty’s plenty in Garmouth. It is safer for everyone, and really doesn’t cause driver’s a massive hardship. I hope that the committee will do the right thing and put safety first.”

Ginny Slater, a concerned resident in Kingston, said: “We live on the corner in Kingston and traffic hares round the corner.

“The problem is with the children hiking up the road on their bikes, they’re not concerned about traffic.

“We need to get something in place before an accident happens.”
