Barbara Dickson to headline Speyfest

One of Scotland’s most legendary singers has been lined up to headline a Moray music festival next summer.

The organisers of the Speyfest extravaganza at Fochabers have revealed that Barbara Dickson will be one of the main attractions of the 2016 event.

The 68-year-old songstress has had 15 albums enter the UK charts and is famed for her hit duet with Elaine Page, I Know Him So Well.

Ms Dickson is set to headline the bash on Friday night, July 29.

Last night thrilled festival organisers expressed their delight at landing the Dunfermline-born star for a top performance.

And Fochabers Lhanbryde councillor Margo Howe said she would be “one of the first in line” when tickets go on sale.

Mrs Howe added: “I think it’s a real coup for Speyfest to get an artist like Barbara Dickson to perform.

“It speaks well of the festival that artists like her are now coming to Fochabers to play, and it’s all down to the hard work of the team behind it.

“I think Barbara Dickson will be a big crowd-puller, and I’ll be amongst the first to line up for a ticket.”

Ms Dickson began singing in clubs around Fife before becoming a staple of the folk circuit in the 1960s and 1970s.

In the latter half of that decade she rose to national fame through a residency on The Two Ronnies, during which time she sang to more than 10million TV viewers every week.

She had UK chart hits with January February and Caravan – and her duet with Elaine Paige remained at number one for four weeks in 1984.

She has been known to tackle pop, rock, folk, traditional Celtic music and showtunes during live shows.

Organisers also announced yesterday that Irish accordion maestro Sharon Shannon will perform at Speyfest next year, along with folk rockers Skerryvore.

The three-day festival’s weekend format has adapted to feature both a seated concert and a standing “stomp” showcase on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Proceedings will draw to a close with the traditional Sunday family activities.

A limited number of tickets will be released on Friday, December 11.

The early-bird tickets will be available from Sound and Vision on Elgin’s South Street, at Christies Chemist in Fochabers or online at www.speyfest.com
