Buchan tractor run set to give boost to local causes

A cavalcade of historic farm vehicles trundled sedately along north-east back roads in an annual fundraising drive.

The 15th annual Buchan Vintage Tractor Run went ahead on Sunday despite the bracing cold and snowy conditions.

Proceeds from the event – which have yet to be tallied up – will be split between Peterhead Community Hospital and the Marie Curie cancer charity.

Organiser Doug Nicol said it was a great day for everyone who was involved.

“It was a beautiful start, but it finished off snowing,” he said.

“We have done this for 15 years now and we have raised more than £75,000.

“We’re raising money for Peterhead and Marie Curie this year, but we choose different things every year.”

For Sunday’s run, 75 classic tractors, some dating back to the 1940s, set off from Fetterangus and made their way through Strichen, Riding Hill and Peathill.

And, as tradition dictates, all of the drivers stopped at the Ban Car Hotel in Lonmay for lunch before returning to Fetterangus.

The popular event started as an idea from Mr Nicol and fellow vintage vehicle enthusiast Bill Elliot, from Macduff.

The first outing was so successful that it was decided to use the event to raise cash for charities.

Previous beneficiaries have included the National Asthma Campaign, the Crossroads Caring for Carers group and Peterhead’s Willowbank Centre, which cares for people with learning difficulties.
