Fundraisers in Peterhead have clinched a national award in recognition of their contribution to Cancer Research UK.

The cancer charity’s annual Flame of Hope Awards recognise the efforts of fundraisers and volunteers across the country.

And this year, the team behind Peterhead’s Relay for Life took home an accolade for their community work at a ceremony in London.

In 2014, Relay for Life Peterhead became the first event of its kind in the UK to raise over £1,000,000 for the life-saving work of the charity.

The committee’s passion for the event attracted over 600 people of all ages to the race with more than 30 teams taking part.

Lorraine Coleman, chairwoman of the Peterhead group, said: “It is a great honour for Relay For Life Peterhead to be awarded a Flame of Hope Award for fundraising in the community.

“This award is for everyone who has contributed to our relay since 2006. I was delighted to share the experience of collecting the award with Angie Shearer, who was our event chair from 2006 to 2012, and Louise Cook, our accounts chair.

“I hope that the public will join us on the 4th and 5th of July where we aim to help even more people.”

Dr Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK chief executive, added it was because of groups like the Relay for Life Peterhead that the charity could progress the fight against cancer.

“Progress is only made possible thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters, without whom we would not be able to fund outstanding scientists, doctors and nurses,” he said.

“Our Flame of Hope Awards give us the opportunity to celebrate and say thank you to these enormously generous volunteers and supporters for the fantastic work they do.”
