Michael Gardyne: Only way is up for new-look Ross County

Michael Gardyne feels much-changed Ross County will only get better.

Ross County midfielder Michael Gardyne reckons his side’s best is yet to come.

After starting the season with a 2-0 loss against champions Celtic at Parkhead, the Staggies have taken four points from the last two games, with Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against St Johnstone coming three days after a comfortable 2-0 win against Hamilton Accies.

Gardyne spent last season on loan from Dundee United before signing a two-year contract in the summer and is confident the much-changed Staggies will only improve as the new additions settle in.

The 29-year-old said: “It’s the manager’s team now and we’ve had a full pre-season behind us.

“People saw the way we finished last season and that’s the way we want to start this season.

“The team will gel with games. We’ve had a few matches now and it was great to go away to Hungary in pre-season and get to know each other.

“The more games we play together, the better we’ll get. I’m looking forward to the games coming up. I think we will do well this season.”

Gardyne believes competition in the squad will help the team’s performance and added: “There has been a massive change. The spirit in the dressing room is great, which is what the manager wants.

“We’ve got two players in every position, so it’s tough. If somebody isn’t playing well, they’re going to be out of the team.

“It’s up to the players who are starting to keep playing well. Looking at our bench from Tuesday night, we’ve got great players ready to come on and make a difference.”

County take on promoted Hearts in their next fixture at Victoria Park on Saturday, with the Jambos off to a fine start on their return to the Premiership.

Gardyne added: “It will be tough as Hearts have had a great start as well but we want to win all our home games.

“We started well against St Johnstone on Tuesday, having not done so in the first two games – that was a positive.

“We need to keep creating chances. On another day we could have scored three or four against St Johnstone.

“But we’re not getting ahead of ourselves – we’ve had one win and a draw after a defeat in our first game.”
