Derek McInnes looking to follow in footsteps of Dons 1984/5 title winning squad

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes believes his Dons can emulate the feat of Sir Alex Ferguson’s title winning side of 1985 by opening the season with five victories.

The Dons have won all four of their league matches in the new campaign ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Firhill to face Partick Thistle.

Ferguson’s Reds of 1984-85 are the only side in the club’s history to have started a season with five victories – and the Dons went on to beat Celtic to the title by seven points.

Last season Aberdeen achieved a record points haul for a non-Old Firm team in Scotland’s top flight in the modern era and McInnes would love his side to claim another record.

McInnes said: “It’s quite surprising when you think of it.

“It’s an opportunity but, like everything else, we will be more comfortable talking about it if we manage to do it than beforehand.

“It’s something to go for and we want to keep building on the good start we’ve made and getting that consistency right from the off.

“There were a few records brought to our attention last season which we managed to beat at Aberdeen and, while it’s good to see the players achieving those targets, we want to work towards something more tangible.

“It’s good all the same. It shows that we’re going the right way.”

In stark contrast to Aberdeen’s flawless start to the new campaign, Partick are without a win this season and were dumped out of the League Cup after a 1-0 defeat at home by Falkirk this week.

But McInnes, who watched Partick on Tuesday, is refusing to underestimate Alan Archibald’s team.

He said: “Partick have always been a good side. Alan Archibald does not probably get the same level of support that other teams in the league have had in terms of being able to bring in players.

“He has a tough job. He’s lost a lot of key players over the last wee while and he’s still trying to make the necessary adjustments.

“They’re a good side and I’ve always loved the way Partick go out and try to win games. They are brave and always ask questions of their opponents. You have to work extremely hard against them.”

Peter Pawlett and Willo Flood, who both missed last weekend’s 2-0 win against Dundee with ankle injuries, are in contention to face Partick.

McInnes added: “They have been back training without any problems, so both will come into the squad.”
