Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes believes the contribution of David Goodwillie to his side’s storming start to the new season should not be overlooked.

The Dons have lost only one of their 10 matches this season and have made a perfect start to the Scottish Premiership with four wins from four ahead of today’s trip to Partick Thistle.

Goodwillie is yet to score this season but has played his part with five assists and a string of impressive displays.

The former Blackburn Rovers attacker has not hit the back of the net since February but McInnes says his overall play has warranted an extended run in the team.

The Aberdeen manager said: “Last week against Dundee was the first time David and Adam (Rooney) started a game together and they each contributed, David with his performance and Adam with his performance and his goals.

“We’re fortunate to have that level of forward at the club but, like any forward, Goodie will not want to stand back and watch Adam score the goals.

“Goodie isn’t finding goals hard to come by in training and I’m sure if he keeps up his level of performance and getting into the right areas plus the right service he’ll get in among the goals.

“David has stayed in the team because his performances have been good and he’s contributed to our victories.

“Forwards are selfish by nature, which isn’t a bad thing, and Adam and David are totally different.

“Adam does his best work in the penalty box whereas Goodwillie has evolved into the player he is but he will be keen to get among the goals.”

McInnes bolstered his attacking options by signing Josh Parker on loan from Red Star Belgrade this month but the Aberdeen manager does not expect to do any further business before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

The Dons signed Kenny McLean on the final day of the January transfer window but McInnes has told supporters not to expect any new arrivals before the deadline.

He said: “We hope that no one comes calling for any of our players and we can quietly tiptoe towards the window closing.

“We still have a game to get through, so you never know what can happen from that but I don’t see anything happening.”
