Ross County: Foster delight at silencing Aberdeen critics

Richard Foster is hopeful Ross County can return to winning ways against Hamilton this weekend.
Richard Foster is hopeful Ross County can return to winning ways against Hamilton this weekend.

Ross County defender Richard Foster revelled in silencing his critics in the Aberdeen support on Friday – and has tipped his club to join the Dons in achieving a top six finish this season.

Brian Graham’s double secured a 2-0 win for County.

Foster incurred the wrath of the Dons’ support, with his eight-year stint at Pittodrie having been interrupted by a season-long loan to Rangers in 2010, before he joined the Ibrox club permanently three years later.

Friday night’s match was the first time the 30-year-old had come up against his old side and Foster was pleased to respond to the abuse by helping the Highlanders consign the Reds to their fourth successive defeat.

Foster said: “It’s always easier to take it when we’re winning. It’s opposition supporters, so I expect nothing less. I spent a long time at Aberdeen.

“It was quite surprising how many songs my name could fit into. It’s something I’ll look back and laugh at because we won the game.

“When the fixtures came out I realised they were last on the list. It was one I was desperate to get in the team for.

“It was a surreal experience to start with but then I kind of blocked it out because I wanted to win the game.

“It was nice once they finally calmed down and left me alone for a wee bit. I went over to take a corner at the end and they got back on the chants. I was smiling at that one, though, as I knew we were going to win.

“At the end, emotions came through because it was a nice feeling to win. Against your old club, it’s always that wee bit special.

“It’s a great feeling for me, personally, and the boys in the dressing-room. We’re all buzzing. They’re a top side and we have beaten them.”

County have now faced every Premiership team this season and Foster says on current form the Staggies are well on their way to consolidating a top-six position.

Foster added: “The manager said before the game these are the games they feel we’re good enough to win. We just need to show we feel the same.

“Some of the young boys in the squad maybe don’t realise how good they actually are.

“Top six is our aim. Anything above that is a bonus. There’s no reason we can’t go a bit higher.”
