St Johnstone struck late to secure all three points in a 3-2 victory against Ross County, in a thrilling encounter at Victoria Park.

Saints had been in command at half-time, thanks to a double from David Wotherspoon, however the Staggies struck back in the second-half through near post finishes from Liam Boyce and an own goal from Murray Davidson.

The Perth side grabbed the winner two minutes from time though, thanks to Dave Mackay’s sublime free-kick.

County manager Jim McIntyre named an unchanged team from the side that went down 3-1 against Aberdeen at Pittodrie the previous weekend.

Saints made three changes from the side that drew 1-1 against Dundee in its last outing, with Tam Scobbie, Darnell Fisher and Liam Craig drafted in for Brian Easton, Chris Kane and Steven Anderson.

St Johnstone made the perfect start when Wotherspoon closed down County goalkeeper Gary Woods’ clearance, with the ball landing in the net just three minutes in.

The goal was an early blow for the Staggies but they came close to a leveller soon afterwards, when Martin Woods’ cross picked out Liam Boyce, but his header was well saved by Saints goalkeeper Alan Mannus.

The visitors created further chances, with Craig heavily involved. His swerving shot on 22 minutes forced Woods to show quick reactions, before the former Hibernian midfielder’s corner nearly caught Woods out, the on-loan Leyton Orient goalkeeper having to tip the cross away.

The Dingwall side passed up a glorious chance to level on 31 minutes however, when Richard Foster’s cross from the left picked out the head of Stewart Murdoch, but he somehow nodded wide from close-range with the goal gaping.

The Staggies were quick to create again, with Craig Curran’s header releasing Tony Dingwall, but the youngster dragged his effort just wide from the edge of the box.

Just two minutes before the interval, the Perth outfit doubled their lead in spectacular fashion, when Wotherspoon collected the ball from Scobbie’s free-kick, before cutting inside on to his right foot and unleashing an unstoppable strike into Woods’ top-left corner from 18 yards.

The early stages of the second-half brought few glimpses of goalmouth action, with County manager McIntyre making withdrawing midfielder Dingwall for forward Alex Schalk as time ran out for the Staggies.

The home side grabbed a lifeline on 68 minutes, when Murdoch’s delivery was prodded home at the near post by Boyce.

County completed the comeback just seven minutes later, albeit with a hint of good fortune, when Davidson headed into his own net from Schalk’s corner.

The Staggies had all the momentum and if either side looked like taking all three points it looked to be them. However, their good work was undone by a wonderful free-kick by Saints skipper Dave Mackay, who curled the ball over the wall to leave Woods helpless and secure the points at the end of a thrilling encounter.
