Jamie Masson admitted he had to take his chance at getting back on the field again for Cove Rangers in the Scottish Cup.

Masson came off the bench and chipped in with the seventh goal as the Aberdeen side routed East of Scotland outfit Dunipace 7-0 at the Balmoral Stadium.

It has been a stop-start campaign for Masson, who has suffered with hamstring and rib issues this year and struggled to get a run in the side.

Manager Jim McIntyre did not make wholesale changes to the Cove side for the game.

Loan players Max Johnston and Jack Sanders were unavailable, with Evan Towler and Scott Ross drafted in to the defence, while captain Mitch Megginson returned to the side after suspension.

That meant a watching brief for Masson, but, along with fellow substitute Leighton McIntosh, he managed to get his name on the scoresheet.

“From a personal point of view, I was delighted just to get some minutes,” he said. “It’s obviously frustrating when you’re on the bench – we all want to be playing- but when you do come on, you have to take your chance.

‘You just have to be patient, to wait for your opportunity’

“I enjoyed getting the best part of half an hour on the pitch, and with the changes the manager made during that part of the game, it gave us an extra impetus.

“If you’re out of the team, you just have to be patient, to wait for your opportunity, keep knocking on the door, and hope that you will get a start.

“It was great to get my goal, too. I just concentrated on getting ahead of the defender and putting my header on target – it was really nice to see it going in.”

Masson also paid tribute to Saturday’s prime goalscorer Gerry McDonagh, who bagged four of the seven goals.

McDonagh endured a difficult start to his time at Cove, but, after getting himself fitter to push for a recall, has been a regular in McIntyre’s teams over the last month.

“Gerry’s absolutely buzzing!” said Masson. “He didn’t know an awful lot about a couple of them, but that was good striker play – he was in there and he got the reward.

“As a striker, you take any goal, don’t you?

“He’s done well, he’s got four, hopefully he kicks on from that.”
