Waters is dam bent on holding back the Clyde

Elgin City goalkeeper Marc Waters admits his performances have not been up to scratch this season as he braces himself for competition for a starting spot.

Waters was dropped for Tuesday’s Peterhead game in favour of Iain Ross but found himself thrown back into the action in the second half after the trialist stopper pulled up making a clearance. Elgin lost 7-0.

Manager Gavin Price said after the Balmoor humbling that he would assess all his defensive options and the injury to Ross, ahead of the home fixture against Clyde today.

Conceding 14 goals in three games does not make pretty reading for anyone connected with the Borough Briggs outfit and Elgin today face a Bully Wee team that has kept clean sheets in its last four league matches.

Price will not name his team until this morning and Waters hopes to have done all he can to prove he deserves to be between the posts come kick-off.

He said: “I feel I’ve trained hard this week to try put things right.

“It’s never nice finding yourself out and, particularly as a goalkeeper, when you’re coming on trying to make an impact, it can be difficult.

“My form has been more inconsistent than I would have liked but it’s not something someone is going to give me.

“It’s down to myself to either make a change in training or stick to my routine.

“But it’s part-and-parcel of football and it’s up to me to get back in the team.

“I embrace the competition because it can only get me playing at a higher level.

“That’s the same all over the park. We’ve had Bruce Anderson and now Zack Elbouzedi come in on loan, so the squad is getting bigger.”

The only plus from Tuesday’s emphatic defeat is that Elgin have a chance to bounce back on home soil today to reignite their play-off ambitions. Four defeats in five games has seen them drop four points below the play-off positions – after being as high as third in the first month of the campaign.

Waters added: “It’s good that we only have days between games to put it right. People looking at the last result will think that’s us done, so it’s up to us to put some results together and get closer to the play-off positions.”
