Aberdeen last night completed the signing of free agent Greg Halford on a deal until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old defender is expected to go straight into the squad for tonight’s match against Hamilton Accies.

Halford has been a free agent since leaving Cardiff City at the end of last season.

Dons manager Derek McInnes was keen to bolster his defensive options after Tommie Hoban suffered a cruciate ligament injury and Shay Logan was ruled out for eight to 12 weeks with an ankle injury.

Halford began his career at Colchester United before joining Reading. He also had spells at Sunderland, Wolves, Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest and Rotherham United as well as loan spells at Charlton, Sheffield United, Brighton and Birmingham City.

McInnes said: “I am delighted to bring someone of Greg’s experience and ability to the club. He’s a hugely versatile player and that made him very attractive to us in terms of what we are looking for between now and the end of the season.

“At this stage of the campaign it is difficult to bring any player in so I’m really pleased to we’ve managed to secure someone of his stature.

“Speaking to Greg he is naturally excited about the prospect of coming to Aberdeen and we look forward to working with him.”
