Love Island fans waved goodbye to their social lives as the villa opened its doors for the new series.
Eleven singles looking for romance have entered the villa on the Spanish island of Majorca in the first instalment on ITV2 on Monday.
The new group of contestants includes Danny Dyer’s daughter, a doctor who is taking some time away from the accident and emergency ward, a design engineer and a model.
Host Caroline Flack kicked things off by getting the swimsuit-clad contestants to couple up for the first time.
Dr Alex George got off to a particularly rocky start when none of the ladies stepped forward to indicate any interest in him.
He selected air hostess Laura Anderson – but she rapidly ditched him for Wes Nelson.
He ended up being paired with musical theatre performer Samira Mighty who had also not been chosen, and the pair commiserated about not catching anyone’s eye.
There was an early shock when Flack revealed a twist.
Soon after the contestants had made their first matches and were safely in their couples, she told them that a sixth male – Adam Collard – was going to pick one of the women to pair up with.
“In 24 hours, he will be coupling up with one of your girls, leaving one of you single and vulnerable,” she said.
“Because you know the rules. To stay on Love Island you have to be in a couple.”
Viewers were thrilled to see the reality show return for another series and joked that they would be locking the doors and switching off their phones for the duration.
“Aye I’m hooked, #LoveIsland has got me.. goodbye world,” joked one person.
Another person tweeted: “day 1 of love island and i’ve pretty much abandoned my social life, schoolwork and boyfriend all in one ahahah whoops.”
Love Island continues on ITV2.
