Greggs set to takeover empty shop in Inverurie town centre

New plans have been approved, subject to condition, to open a Greggs outlet in a north-east town.

The bakery, which has just under 1,700 branches nationwide, will take over the old Scottish Hydro Electric store on Market Place in Inverurie.

The plans for the extractor grilles at the rear of the building have been given approval, pending the installation of an odour control system.

Another application has been approved for two illuminated signs and one illuminated projecting sign on the frontage of the building.

Describing the planning applications, Greggs stated the shop would have “internal white LED lights – letters and quattro dots illuminated” and a “new aluminium shopfront and two extract grilles”.

The Inverurie site has lain vacant for almost a year since SSE made the decision to close it in March 2016.

An objection was received from Inverurie Community Council, whose secretary Eric Simpson said in his letter: “We wish to object on the grounds of both noise and odour.

“Inverurie has a plethora of similar retail outlets emitting unpleasant smells. It would be anticipated that there will be a noise element that will have a significant nuisance impact to immediate shops and residential property.”

None the less, councillors at the Garioch Area Committee yesterday agreed to give the plans the go-ahead, but on the condition that a noise assessment was submitted and a odour control system installed.
