Widow in tragic trip to site of husband’s fatal crash

THE devastated wife of a motorcyclist who died in Glencoe will visit the scene of the fatal crash with police, it emerged last night.

And tributes paid to Robert Morrison revealed that the road through the mountainous area was one of his favourite routes.

The 48-year-old engineer for Perth and Kinross Council died in a horrific smash while riding his motorcycle at the weekend.

He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, just north of the Glencoe Ski Centre on the A82 Fort William to Glasgow road, around 11am on Saturday morning.

His Suzuki Bandit bike collided with a car leaving both vehicles completely destroyed by fire.

The two occupants of the car sustained minor injuries and were taken to Fort William’s Belford Hospital for treatment.

Mr Morrison’s wife, Diane, yesterday told how police officers will take her to the scene of her husband’s death.

The couple lived in Auchterhouse, a village outside of Dundee, with daughter, Beth, 10, and 15-year-old son, Robert.

Originally from Dryburgh in Dundee, he is also survived by his parents Bob, 80, and Ivy, 79, two sisters and a brother.

Mrs Morrison said: “A big, gentle giant, he was so thoughtful all the time about everything, which makes this so devastating.

“Perhaps I’ll never know the fine details, what happened at the last second but the police said they’ll take me to where it took place.

“Bob loved that run into Glencoe and when I get him back he will be buried at Auchterhouse, he’ll be close.”

Work colleagues at Perth and Kinross Council are said to be “stunned and saddened” by Mr Morrison’s sudden death.

Jim Valentine, executive director for environment at the local authority, said: “Bob joined the council in 2002 as one of our first graduate engineers, and worked his way up to become a chartered engineer and a valued member of the structures and flooding team.

“He had recently led and successfully completed a number of large roads projects and will be greatly missed.”

He added: “Our thoughts go out to Bob’s family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time.”

Fort William and Ardnamurchan councillor Brian Murphy said: “Obviously the thoughts of the community go out to Mrs Morrison and the family.

“These tragic accidents happen all too often on the A82.

“I would hope that the family may find some comfort from visiting the accident site.”

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision and who has not already spoken to officers to contact them.

Mr Morrison is the fourth motorcyclist to die on the A82 trunk road this year.

A report on his death has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.
