Greek on Ross County radar

Greek defender Evangelos Oikonomou could return to Ross County in January.

The 26-year-old left back made a big impact in 18 games from January to May last season as the Dingwall club surged up to fifth in the table in their first season in the top flight.

Oikonomou severed his contract with Greek club Veria FC in November and is a free agent. But a move back to Scotland is far from guaranteed as Staggies manager Derek Adams has doubts about fitness and finance when it comes to securing a deal.

Adams said: “Evangelos has terminated his contract in Greece but he is not free until the January transfer window.

“We would look at him again but if we can do it or whether things would work out is another question. He has not really played this season, so his match fitness would have to be assessed.

“He wanted more money than we could afford. He liked being here but he was offered a contract in Greece. Financially, he had taken a hit to come here and he wanted to try to get back to the wages he was on before.

“He would have to take a hit again to come back here. But if you are out of work, you are not taking a hit are you?

“He was a good player but I don’t know how things will progress.

“He is always in touch with me and (director of football) George (Adams), so you never say never.

“I felt at the time he should have stayed here, done well, and then possibly won a move to another club.”

Adams, meanwhile, has targeted a return to the Scottish Cup final ahead of tomorrow’s fourth round home tie against Hibs.

The Staggies reached the 2010 cup final before falling to Dundee United at Hampden and Adams wants to go back to national stadium.

He said: “We emptied the Highlands that day. The support was magnificent.

“They really did follow us. People came from all over the world to support Ross County. People who had maybe grown up in this area and moved away.

“The players really managed to bring the Highlands alive and Ross-shire alive at that time.

“It was a phenomenal experience.

“We have had fabulous experiences in the Scottish Cup and we want to do it again.”
