SNP support sprinklers in Aberdeen high rises “in principle”

Aberdeen’s SNP group has come out in favour of putting sprinklers into the bin rooms of Aberdeen tower blocks “in principle”.

The Press and Journal revealed this week that the local authority was investigating the feasibility of installing the systems across the city’s 59 high rises in the wake of the Grenfell tower disaster in London.

Since 2015 there have been blazes in refuse areas of Grampian Court, Promenade Court and Linksfield Court.

The Grenfell Tower blaze in London, which claimed the lives of at least 79, has focused attention on the safety of high-rise blocks – though none in Scotland have the exterior cladding blamed for the severity of that deadly inferno.

SNP councillor for Northfield and Mastrick North Jackie Dunbar said: “This seems like a move which would help to improve safety in our high rise buildings and I would be supportive of this in principle.

“Over the coming weeks and months we will start to hear more about what went wrong at Grenfell Tower. If we find out there is anything that we need to be doing in Aberdeen that we are not then I will be pushing for those standards to be adopted.

“At this point in time, it is also important that we hear what residents have to say and show we are listening. That is why we are aiming to have an SNP councillor at every residents fire safety meeting in the city.”
