Football fans will pay tribute to a lifelong Dons fan who was found dead after vanishing from his home.

Kevin Bartlet, from Ellon, went missing last Monday and was found the next day.

The popular football coach, who was also an IT technician at Ellon Academy, was just 32.

As well as helping the under-14s team at the Meadows Football Club develop their skills, Mr Bartlet also trained youngsters in the academy’s team and had been looking forward to a trip to Valencia later this month.

The president of the Aberdeenshire Secondary Schools Football Association was also a dedicated Dons fan, and regularly attended their matches at Pittodrie.

Now friends are aiming to turn the stadium red in tribute to him at next week’s crunch tie against St Johnstone, which comes as Aberdeen sit at the top of the Scottish Premiership table after winning all eight league fixtures so far.

Supporters will unveil a banner in stadium reading “AFC born and bred. Always a red. RIP big Kev.”

Organiser James Bruce has called on fans to show their support, and bring along flags to wave.

Mr Bruce, also from Ellon, said: “Recently a lifelong Dons fan and former football coach of mine and many others sadly passed away aged just 32.

“In memory of Kevin Bartlet, I have organised for a banner to be produced.

“To give Kev the send-off he deserves, after years dedicated to the Dandies and coaching youngsters across the shire, I have been given permission to have the banner displayed throughout the next home game vs St Johnstone on October 3, and would love it if as many flags as possible could be brought and flown for the St Johnstone game.”

Several friends and fellow supporters have backed the idea online, with Stuart Mitchell posting: “RIP mate, from speaking to people there you made a big impact on our game and will be missed. Here’s hoping you get a decent send off at Pittrodrie.”

A spokesman for Aberdeen Football Club said: “We’re fully behind what will be a fitting tribute to a great Aberdeen fan.”
