A hammer-wielding vandal caused thousands of pounds of damage during a 20-minute Halloween wrecking spree in Aberdeen.

Police were contacted by 17 angry motorists after their cars were targeted during the rampage.

Officers with sniffer dogs were sent to the scene but they are still hunting the culprit.

He is described as being aged between 15-22, about 6ft and was wearing a light grey tracksuit.

Among the vehicles damaged was a mini-bus used to take children with special needs to school.

Its back window smashed in and similar damage was caused to cars in three different streets.

Last night, one victim said he was wakened by the sound of “hammer on glass”.

The man asked not to be identified as he fears for the safety of himself and his two young children.

He said: “I was in bed when I heard someone hitting the window with what sounded like a hammer.

“I looked out the window and saw him running up the street before I called the police.

“I do the school run as my boss has a contract with the council.

“Police with dogs came round but he was long gone.

“My kids are scared to go outside and I’m scared to sleep because every night it seems like there is something new.

“I’m meeting with my MSP to try and get a new place because I just can’t take it here.”

The vandalisms happened in Marchburn Road, Provost Rust Drive and Rosehill Drive in Aberdeen’s Northfield area.

George Mason, a paint sprayer, who lives in Marchburn Road, said: “We’ve had stuff like this in the past but it’s quieted down recently. It’s disgusting someone has done this.”

Northfield councillor Gordon Graham, who lives in Provost Rust Drive, urged anyone with information to come forward.

He said: “It’s a real shame that people can’t leave their cars outside their houses without fear.

“I’m hopeful the police catch this man as it can have a real impact on the image of an area.

“I urge anyone with any information, no matter how small, to contact police.”

Witnesses describe hearing the smash of hammer on glass as the vandal struck between 2.20am and 2.40am over the approximately three mile stretch.

Police said they had received 17 reports of vandalism between 2.20am-2.40am on Saturday, but one witness claimed he had been told more than 50 vehicles had been targeted.

A spokesman for the force said: “During the incident, a number of vehicles were reported to have been damaged within the Northfield area of Aberdeen, in particular on Marchburn Road, Provost Rust Drive and Rosehill Drive.

“Police are keen to trace any witnesses who may have seen a male in this area at the time.”

Officers have urged anyone with information to contact them on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 55111.
