Work was suspended on Third Don crossing project yesterday as police and health and safety chiefs probed the tragic death of a worker.

Fifty-eight-year-old Ian Walker from Dundee died in an accident at the Danestone site north of the river on Wednesday.

Paramedics were called following the incident around 4.45pm, but Mr Walker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Yesterday, police guarded the entrance to the site near Fairview Street as officers tried to piece-together the moments leading up to the tragic accident.

A police photographer focused his attention on an excavator digger, which had stopped on top of a mound of earth.

A spokeswoman for contractor Balfour Beatty said bosses closed the site “out of respect” and for police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to carry out their inquiries.

“Our deepest sympathies are with our colleague’s family, friends and co-workers at this time,” she added.

Construction work on the £18million bridge started in August 2014, and should have finished in December. It is not due for completion until March.

A spokeswoman for the HSE said its role was to assist police while the force carried out the initial investigation.

Councillor Ross Grant, transport spokesman for Aberdeen City Council’s administration, said officials were assisting in any way they could.

“Following this tragic incident it is normal for work to be suspended in order for a full investigation to be carried out,” he said.

“The HSE are a statutory body and it is only right and proper that they investigate this matter fully. Aberdeen City Council will obviously assist in any way that we can.

“My thoughts and those of the council as a whole are with the relatives of Mr Walker at this tragic time.”

Aberdeen Donside MSP Mark McDonald said: “My thoughts are of course with him and his family, and also to the people who witnessed the accident, which must have been a dreadful experience.”

Construction giant Balfour Beatty was awarded the contract for the bridge in June 2014.

The crossing will connect the Parkway in Bridge of Don at its Whitestripes Road junction with Tillydrone Avenue and up to St Machar Drive.
