Councillor calls for “open and transparent” talks on Strachan School decision

Strachan School, near Banchory, has been mothballed
Strachan School, near Banchory, has been mothballed

A local councillor has called for a meeting to be held so parents, staff and the wider Strachan community know what the situation is.

Councillor Karen Clark said it was important for the community to be given the chance to understand why Aberdeenshire Council made the sudden decision to temporarily shut the school.

The Banchory councillor said: “It’s very sad. We’ve seen as local councillors how distressing this has been not just for the children but the parents and staff too because it’s happened so quickly.

“The community will feel it quite badly because they have already lost the post office and the shop, and their concerns about the school being under threat is very understandable.

“We need to have a meeting as soon as we can when the term starts so we can get education officers, local councillors, everyone at the school and the wider community together so they all know what’s happening.

“We need to be open and transparent with the parents and community because it’s important people know why this has happened. It was quite a thriving wee school.”

Ms Clark added it was important to also consider any opportunities to reopen the school – and if parents were likely to move their children back again if that happened.

Councillor Jill Webster said: “Several years ago, the community fought a hard battle to keep the school open – I was a community councillor at the time – and it has continued to be a thriving school ever since, which makes this sudden decision to mothball even more difficult to take.

“It has been a real hub for the village, totally integrated into and enriching the life of the community with a very active parent council.

“I can fully understand why the parents and community feel so aggrieved, it is very sad and upsetting.”

Fellow Banchory councillor Linda Clark added: “There’s a process that the council goes through when the numbers have dropped.

“The three local councillors are heavily involved to try and find a way to support everyone. We have to do that we can for this little country school and the people that want to have their children educated there.”
