Self-described Elgin “idiot” broke hand punching car windows

An apprentice joiner from Moray described himself as “an idiot” to police after breaking his hand while punching car windows through.

Ethan Reid was out drinking with friends on Friday, February 10, before losing his temper after being ejected from a get-together.

Yesterday, the 19-year-old admitted to willfully destroying property belonging to another at Elgin Sheriff Court.

The owner of the silver Vauxhall Astra had left the car, which he was using only for storage, outside his ex-wife’s home on Elgin’s Kingsmills.

Fiscal, Alex Swain, said that in the early hours of February 11, Reid had “become unhappy” and left the property.

“When he returned he was refused entry to the house”, she said.

Ms Swain added: “The accused then punched the front and rear windows of the car which was outside as well as the windscreen, causing them to smash.

“He then sat on a nearby wall until the police were called.

“Officers arrived after 3am to find Reid covered in his own blood.

“He was detained and taken to hospital, where it was discovered that he had a broken hand and a dislocated little finger.”

The procurator fiscal said that there was no real cost of damage as the Astra was not insured, and was in the process of being scrapped.

Reid’s solicitor, Stephen Carty, said that he “had poor memory of the events as he had consumed so much alcohol.”

Mr Carty added: “My client was the author of his own misfortune in many regards.

“He described himself as an idiot to police officers and that is a safe description of the way he was behaving that evening.”

Reid, of Anderson Drive in Elgin, was given 65 hours of supervised community service to complete within six months.
