An Argentinian woman living in Aberdeen was caught drink-driving while celebrating her country’s World Cup win last month.

Payroll advisor Veronica Ameri had consumed two Coronas while watching Argentina win a tension-packed World Cup final on penalties against France on December 18.

The Argentinian community in the Granite City had arranged, in the event of them winning, to congregate in the Castlegate area to celebrate – but Ameri, 35, had not realised she was over the alcohol limit.

She pled guilty to driving with 46 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath on Union Street.

The legal limit is just 22 microgrammes.

Defence agent Ian Woodward-Nutt said his client had lived in the UK for around two years and had no previous convictions.

He said: “December 18 was the day of the World Cup final.

“My client and her husband had watched the match and, during it, she consumed two bottles of Corona.

“Argentina won the game and Argentinian nationals had arranged to meet, in the event of being victorious, at the Castlegate area.

“My client, having drunk only a small amount of alcohol, mistakenly understood that she would be safe to drive.

“It seems the limit in Argentina is similar to the old limit in Scotland [35 microgrammes] and, as a result, she found herself falling foul of the law and deeply regrets that.”

Sheriff James Mulgrew banned Ameri, of Bellfield View, Aberdeen, from driving for a year and fined her £320.
