A drink-driver has been banned from the road after ploughing into the back of a bus in Aberdeen city centre.

Konrad Kanski, who was driving a BMW, smashed into the rear of the number 12 as it sat at a bus stop near Gilcomstoun Steps.

The 45-year-old, who was more than two-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit, brazenly gave police a false name but was quickly found out.

Fiscal depute Sean Ambrose told Aberdeen Sheriff Court the incident happened around 6.30pm on July 6 2022.

‘It’s a dangerous thing to do’

Mr Ambrose said the driver of the bus had pulled into the stop at Gilcomstoun Steps when he heard a “loud crash followed by a lighter bang”.

On looking in his mirror, he saw a silver BMW positioned across the carriageway with damage to its front end.

The bus driver had a clear view of Kanski behind the wheel and police were contacted.

Officers traced and arrested Kanski, who initially gave a false name.

‘Could have ended up with someone being very badly injured or worse’

Kanski, of Hutcheon Court, Aberdeen, pled guilty to driving with 58 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 22 microgrammes.

He also admitted failing to give police the true identity of the driver.

Defence agent Iain McGregor said there was “not a great deal” that could be said in mitigation.

He said: “He accepts he was driving over the limit. He offers no excuse for that.

“He accepts he should not have been behind the wheel.”

Regarding the false name, Mr McGregor said: “That was bound to fail and did fairly quickly.”

Sheriff Donald Ferguson said: “It’s a dangerous thing to do, to be driving with this level of alcohol.

“This could have ended up with someone being very badly injured or worse.”

He banned Kanski from driving for 16 months and fined him £840.
