A Highland Volkswagen dealership is expected to close at the end of next week with the loss of six jobs.

Staff at Hawco Fort William on the Caol Industrial Estate in Ardgour Road, Caol, are currently being consulted about the closure, which is understood to be planned for Friday October 3.

Hawco Group marketing director Kevin Hawco was unwilling to confirm that the dealership, which includes a service department and car sales, would close on that date.

Mr Hawco, who is based in Inverness, said: “We have six members of staff at Fort William and we are in a consultation process with them at the moment about their future and possible redundancies.”

He confirmed that the group, which also has premises in Inverness, Elgin and Peterhead, had been operating the dealership in the Lochaber town since 2002.

Caol Community Council chairman Sandy Watson said he would be disappointed to see the garage close.

He said: “I think it would be very disappointing to see any local business close, especially one that has been here for so long.

“There would also be concerns about what would be going there next as it will be right next to the primary school.”

Mr Watson added that he was surprised to hear it was expected to close as it seemed quite well used.

He said: “It certainly seems busy enough to me and I live directly opposite it.

“There are frequently people there looking at cars, even at night time. It also does a lot of repair work.”
