A young man died after a horrific car crash on a Highland road yesterday.

Gavin Farquhar, 30, was a passenger in the black Mitsubishi Lancer which was in a collision in Caithness yesterday. No other vehicle was involved.

The accident happened on the A99 between Wick and John O’Groats, about one mile south of Keiss, near Quoys of Reiss farm.

It is believed his friend was driving the vehicle. He was taken by road ambulance to Caithness General Hospital in Wick.

No other car is believed to have been involved in the crash, which happened on a bend.

The car suffered severe damage to its front end and roof in the accident, especially on the passenger side, and may have rolled or somersaulted before landing on its wheels.

It ended up with its front on the road and its rear on the grass verge of the busy trunk road, leaving a trail of debris visible lying in the middle of the carriageway.

Parts of the car and vegetation from the verge could also be seen lying on the road while the emergency services worked at the scene.

Local diversions were put in place while accident investigators examined the scene.

It is understood that the specialist road traffic policing unit was called from Dingwall to investigate the smash, which happened just after 3.30pm.

A man who lives near the crash scene said: “I heard the car going past and saw it pass. The next thing I knew was when I looked out and I saw the dust coming up.

“I went down to the scene to see what I could do and it didn’t look good.”

Two fire crews from Wick were called to the scene.

A spokesman for the fire and rescue service said: “We were called to a road traffic collision one mile south of Keiss on the A99.

“Two appliances from Wick attended but the two casualties were out of the vehicle on their arrival.

“We then helped make the scene safe before being stood down.”

Last night a police spokesman confirmed the road was closed due to a “serious road traffic collision”.
