A Keith schoolgirl with a rare muscle wasting condition has vowed to keep fundraising after completing a demanding charity swim last week.

Ellie Broadley, who has Bethlem myopathy, successfully swam 64 lengths over four days to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign’s Move a Mile for Muscles event.

The 13-year-old has raised over £2000 already and said after completing her challenge that she was shocked by the support she has received.

“I’m really happy, actually knowing I have done a mile in a whole week. It makes me feel proud of myself,” she said.

“I didn’t think I would get that much. I thought I’d raise like £500.

“I think it will help towards research and getting local people with the disability together.”

Ellie said she is now determined to keep fundraising after received overwhelming support from people all across the North-east.

One Aberdeen woman sent Ellie a donation and letter saying: “I read in the newspaper about what you are doing, and I think you are very brave and good luck to you.”

Another letter from a local Keith couple said: “To Ellie, whose courage and selflessness brings courage and inspiration to others.”

The Keith Grammar School pupil added: “It’s nice I got all those letters.

“Now, maybe I can do more things like this and raise more money — not just for my own charity but for other charities too.

“I will just try and push myself hard next time because I want to do it again.”
