Sir Sean crowned toast of Scotland in whisky poll

Sir Sean Connery is best associated with the trademark Martini of James Bond – always ordered with the instruction that it is to be “shaken, not stirred”.

But most people would prefer to have a dram of whisky with the acting great according to a new poll.

The survey, conducted to mark the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, crowned Sir Sean as the Scot the British public would most like to toast in person.

Festival chairman James Campbell said: “I suppose he could be compared to a fine single malt – sophisticated, full of flavour, very rich and distinctly Scottish.

“Sir Sean may be more accustomed to picking up awards and being recognised for his acting, but I hope that he will be delighted with this slightly more unusual honour.

“Sir Sean has lived in the Bahamas for many years, but if he wants to come home to Scotland for the festival there will clearly be no shortage of people queuing up to share a dram with him.”

In the poll of 2,000 whisky fans, the star received a 22% share of the vote – and though this made him top Scot, the overall winner was Winston Churchill.

Sir Sean, who made his name as the womanizing 007, can take some pride in the fact that he is still a hit with the ladies – as more women than men named his as their ideal drinking partner.

Other top-ranking Scottish names included Andy Murray, Sir Alex Ferguson, Mary Queen of Scots and Robert Burns.

The poll also revealed that whisky is the most popular spirit of British men, with adults aged 55 and over especially fond of Scotland’s national drink.

The poll was commissioned by the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival as part of a study into whisky drinking habits ahead of this year’s event.

Mr Campbell added: “I think that we can really take heart from the results of this survey, which shows that whisky remains a popular drink across the UK.”

The five-day celebration of Scotland’s national drink takes place at venues throughout Moray from April 30.
