Cove Rangers: Fraser Fyvie reveals positive discussions on rectifying club’s early-season form

Fraser Fyvie says Cove Rangers have had positive discussions about how to get their season up and running.

Newly-promoted Cove sit second-bottom of the Championship with fellow part-timers Arbroath below them, on the back of four consecutive defeats.

However, in the 2-1 loss to Queen’s Park last weekend there were far more positive signs than had been seen in recent weeks, with manager Jim McIntyre pleased with the reaction he got from his players.

During any period of struggle, analysis of where things have gone wrong is always natural. But this group of players has been so used to success at Cove and have been together long enough to know each other inside out.

“We’ve lost four on the bounce and we’ve had discussions about what is and isn’t working,” said Fyvie. “That has to be done when you’re losing games but in no way is it pointing fingers at anyone or assigning blame.

“We’re all pulling in the right direction. We’ve not had that bit of luck falling for us in the right areas and you don’t get away with making a mistake. We need to rectify that.

“If you take the second goal on Saturday, it comes from me making a misplaced pass. Little things like that you get punished for.

“The level goes up as you go up the leagues. Us and Arbroath being the part-time teams, the table is showing that at the minute. The difference between part-time and full-time is there.

“There’s no question you get to work on a lot more being full-time; you get to speak more to players, analyse things, work on fitness and sharpness. We have got to find solutions to that to win games.”

They take their quest for a second league win back to home soil this weekend, with Hamilton Accies visiting the Balmoral Stadium on Saturday.

McIntyre is continuing efforts to strengthen the squad, having already brought in five new faces, but Fyvie stressed the quality he believes is already in the building.

“We knew it was going to be tough this year,” added Fyvie. “We weren’t going to romp the league. We’ve not got the squad for that in terms of numbers.

“You look at Partick Thistle’s squad this year – it’s fantastic and they have recruited well. If they lose four players, they have got four good players who can step in.

“As a team, it’s up to us to get the job done on the pitch and I believe we’ve got the squad to do that. People coming in can only help us but we’ve got quality here.

“We hope a few boys will be back for Saturday. Blair Yule has been a miss for us, as he’s a very good, influential player. It’ll be good to have him back in due time.

“We were without Scott (Ross) and Mitch (Megginson) last weekend, who are two good players for us.”
