Dramatic finale the perfect lift for Turriff United

Gary Harris netted a dramatic winner for Turriff United on Saturday.
Gary Harris netted a dramatic winner for Turriff United on Saturday.

A stoppage time winner from Gary Harris clinched the points for Turriff United in a seven goal-thriller at Harmsworth Park.

Wick led 3-2 with 13 minutes remaining, but an equaliser from Aaron McKenna and the winner from substitute Harris turned the match on its head.

Both sides went into this one on the back of identical unbeaten runs – 13 wins and a draw – but it was the home side who came unstuck at the end of an absorbing match, which did not disappoint.

Match-winner Harris, who replaced the injury-hit Gary McGowan late on, said: “It was a roller-coaster of a game. When I came on I tried to do something special – if I got one chance I just had to take it – luckily that’s how it turned out.

“It must have been a good game to watch for the spectators. That’s two wins out of two against Wick this season so it shows you just how far we have come.”

The 27-year-old forward conceded he has a struggle on his hands to keep his place in the team and added: “Gary McGowan has been playing up front for the last three games and he has been absolutely brilliant.

“I’ve been out with an ankle injury so I know I have to struggle to get back in the team.

“But that’s part and parcel of football – everyone’s got to participate.”

Turriff started well on a heavy pitch which had passed an early-morning inspection and Andy McAskill was stopped in his tracks in the second minute by Wick defender Grant Steven before he could get a shot off.

The visitors were piling on the pressure and it paid off in the 11th minute when MacAskill collected the ball 20 yards out and let fly with a low shot which flew into the corner of the net.

The goal roused the home side and when a Davie Allan cross was flicked on by Gary Weir to Jack Halliday he looked certain to score, but Lewis Davidson flung himself at the Wick player’s feet to block the ball.

But it was mostly Turriff in the early stages and Jamie Beagrie was only inches away from connecting with a MacAskill delivery right in front of goal.

Wick were starting to see more of the ball and they squared matters on the half-hour mark when Allan got on the end of a Ross Allan free kick to nod the ball home from six yards.

Turriff were forced to make a couple of changes either side of the goal with Lewis Davidson and Beagrie both going off injured.

However, Turriff got their noses in front again in the 57th minute when McGowan scored from the edge of the 18-yard box.

But Wick refused to lie down and it was all-square again in the 71st minute when substitute Steven Anderson stabbed the ball home after a long ball from Richard Macadie was helped on by Sam MacKay.

MacKay was also involved in the next goal when he picked out Allan and the Wick wide man outstripped the Turriff defence to net.

The home side looked as if they had done enough to secure the points but they were dealt a couple of hammer blows before the end.

McKenna got on the end of a Chris Herd cross in the 87th minute to make it 3-3 and in the second minute of injury time Harris popped up with the winner after a long punt from Turriff goalkeeper Kevin Main was knocked into his path by Robert Allan.
