A teenager allegedly attempted to murder his ex-partner and a police officer, as well as slashing a police dog.

Joshua Sutherland is accused of using an axe to try to kill the woman in St Andrews, before stabbing an officer in the chest at a hotel.

The 19-year-old, originally from Inverness but currently of no fixed abode, made no plea when he appeared from custody at Dundee Sheriff Court.

It is alleged Sutherland attempted to murder a woman at an address on Winram Place by striking her on the head with an axe on October 24.

At the Fairmont Hotel on the same date, Sutherland was said to be found in possession of a knife.

The court was told he conducted himself in a disorderly manner by fleeing from police, trying to fight with officers and attempting to strike them with the knife.

Prosecutors allege Sutherland attempted to stab PCs Gary McLaggan, Chris Smart, David Thomson, Nikki Smith and Anthony Garner as well as struggling violently with them.

Sutherland allegedly caused the police dog, called Gray, unnecessary suffering by slashing her to the left shoulder and chest.

A final charge claims Sutherland attempted to murder a person, identified only as PC McGarry, by stabbing him to the left of his chest with a knife.

Sutherland’s appearance from custody was delayed for several days in order for him to receive treatment at Ninewells Hospital.

The case on petition was continued for further examination by Sheriff Gillian Wade QC.

Sutherland was remanded in custody and is expected to make a second court appearance next week.

On Sunday, police requested the help of the local coastguard to search the shoreline for a man following the alleged incident in Winram Place.
