A Gray’s School of Art graduate is launching a new card game inspired by the historic fishing industry of the north-east.
Building on her current work in the field of illustration, 31-year-old Catherine Redgate has ventured into the world of games to develop a coastal-themed card game in the attempt to create ‘useable and functional’ art.
Her game, Waters Edge, consists of illustrated cards which join together to build a town in which players spend a ‘week’ catching and selling fish in order to gain points.
It has been in development since January 2019.
Starting with scraps of paper, marked only with rough symbols, game play developed quickly as cards changed, rules adapted and discussion over logistics took place.
Lots of market research and feedback was received following test games with supportive family, friends and colleagues.
Ms Redgate, originally from Caithness, said: “I’ve found the process very different to anything I’ve done before.
“Game design has brought my illustrations to life and it’s been amazing watching people play a game I have made, and then want to play it again and again.”

Now, with a working prototype, Waters Edge is ready to be revealed.
Ms Redgate has launched the game as a campaign on the crowdfunding website, Kickstarter, where she hopes to build enough support from across the world to bring her game to life.
