A lone piper played outside a coronavirus-hit Aberdeen care home last night in tribute to its hard-working staff.

Residents at Kingswells Care Home, on the outskirts of the city, observed social distancing guidelines as they watched the performance, and locals also looked on.

The crowd then applauded staff at the facility, where six residents were confirmed to have died from Covid-19 last month.

The piping display was just one method the community has chosen to show appreciation for the carers there.

Locals have also raised £2,000 to treat carers and remember the residents who died.

Setting up a Just Giving page for donations online, Kingswells resident Nicky Caldwell aimed to raise £100 with the hope of gifting pamper packs to workers there.

The extra cash will now go towards a bench and plaque at the home paying tribute to both the hard working care staff and those who have died during the pandemic.

Mrs Caldwell said: “I was listening to the radio and a doctor from Glasgow was saying that he was more worried about the care homes, and they had donated some pamper packs to their local care home.

“So that’s just it, I came back and asked our community.

“I know that the care home were one of the ones mentioned in the news as being one of the ones with a high death toll.

“They are in the heart of our community and deserve our recognition.”

Kingswells, Sheddocksley and Summerhill councillor Steve Delaney added: “Even during the difficult times we’re living in, the generosity and community spirit always shines through.

“Local people were deeply saddened when several residents at the home passed away last month and they were also concerned about the staff who had been caring for everyone.

“I know a number of residents have also sent cards to the care home to thank them and to let them know they are thinking of them.”
