The most popular baby names in Scotland have been revealed, but do north and north-east baby names follow national trends? We've looked into the data to find out.

The most popular baby names in Scotland in 2022 have been revealed, with Noah and Olivia topping the list. But what about more locally? We’ve looked at the top baby names for Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, the Highlands, Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles.

Today’s publication from National Records of Scotland reveals all of the names given to babies in Scotland last year in 2022.

Here are the latest baby name trends in the area and how the most popular names compare to the previous year’s top names.

Council area baby name statistics are only available for names that were registered to three or more babies. Councils which had limited releases were Orkney and Shetland.

Top baby names 2022

Aberdeen

The top name for boys in Aberdeen in 2022 was Leo, while for girls it was Olivia.

Other popular names included James and Archie for boys, and Ella and Millie for girls.

In 2021,  the top names for boys were Jack, James and Oliver.

The same year, the top names for girls were Maya, Evie and Olivia.

Aberdeenshire

The top name for boys in Aberdeenshire in 2022  was Brodie, while for girls it was Isla.

Harris and Archie was also popular for boys, while Olivia and Lucy were top picks for girls.

In 2021,  the top names for boys were Finlay and Theo.

The same year, the top names for girls were Emily and Sophie.

Moray

The top name for boys in Moray in 2022 was Brodie, while for girls it was Ava.

James and Luca were also a top pick for parents of boys, while Lily and Lara were popular for girls.

In 2021,  the top names for boys were Finlay and Noah.

The same year, the top names for girls were Ella and Freya.

Highlands

The top name for boys in the Highlands in 2022 was Angus, while for girls it was Isla.

Other popular names for boys were Archie and Charlie, and for girls it was Millie and Freya

In 2021,  the top names for boys were Logan and Brodie.

The same year, the top names for girls were Isla and Olivia.

Shetland

The top name for boys in Shetland in 2022 was Theo, while no data for girls names were given due to small numbers of births.

Other popular names given to boys were Willum, Magnus, Callum, Arthur and Logan.

The top names for boys in Shetland in 2021 were joint between Magnus, Lewis, George and Harry.

In the same year, top names for girls were not released because no names were registered to three or more girls.

Orkney

The top name for boys in Orkney in 2022 was tied between Tommy and Jack, while no data was provided for the top girl’s name due to the small number of babies born.

Other popular names for boys were David and James.

In 2021, there wasn’t any data for names provided due to small numbers.

Western Isles

The top name for boys in the Western Isles in 2022 was tied between Finlay, Noah and Leo, while for girls it was tied between Annie, Freya and Ella.

In 2021 the top name for boys in the Western Isles was tied between Alexander, Ryan, Oliver, Joel, William, Joseph and Matthew, while for girls it was Holly.
