Appeal for more retained firefighters across the north-east

Fire crews who helped save an historic Royal railway carriage earlier this month are looking to strengthen their team.

Retained stations at Balmoral, Huntly, Turriff and Peterhead all helped tackle the blaze at the Old Royal Station in Ballater, which destroyed most of the building.

Amazingly, the firefighters managed to save a replica of the carriage used by Queen Victoria on her trips from Windsor to the nearby Balmoral Castle.

The carriage was suggested by Prince Charles during a visit to the station building, and he returned in 2008 to formally open it.

There was great delight when, amongst the pile of rubble and destruction, it was revealed the crews had managed to save it from the burning wooden building.

And now the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is looking for more retained firefighters to come forward to help create future success stories.

Both men and women aged over 18 are being urged to apply before the deadline on June 1, and applicants should be good team players, have excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

Other stations looking to boost their numbers are Alford, Banchory, Banff, Buckie, Ellon, Fraserburgh, Inverurie, Stonehaven, Cullen, Forres, Lossiemouth and Rothes.

Prospective applicants should live or work within five to eight minutes of their local fire station.

Station manager Bruce Milne said: “Retained firefighters are called upon to attend the same wide range of emergency service as whole-time firefighters, including fires, floods, road traffic accidents, chemical spills and more.

“They can also be called upon to work with whole-time firefighters to promote fire safety messages, giving fire safety advice to schools and other organisations as well as carrying out free home fire risk assessments within their communities.

“It is a very rewarding job and there are tangible benefits for employers who support and allow their staff to become RDS firefighters. Retained equals retrained and employers will have a member of staff who will bring a host of transferable skills.”
