Permission has been granted for a permanent safety barrier on a historic Aberdeen bridge.

While temporary fencing has been in place on Union Bridge for almost two years, it is hoped a more long-lasting solution will further improve safety.

A number of people have been left injured following incidents at the 130ft bridge over Denburn Road.

Councillor Bill Cormie and former member Jim Kiddie raised the issue of safety at the site five years ago.

He said: “It’s fantastic that at long last this barrier will be put up.”

The proposed structure will be made from steel and coated in a copper-coloured powder to help it blend in with its surroundings, which date back to 1805.

Mr Cormie added: “Even with the temporary fencing there have been a couple of incidents.

“It’s very ugly, right in the city centre for tourists and other people to pass by every day.

“The sooner we get this up the better.”

The council’s decision notice said: “The impact of the safety measures to Union Bridge is justified by the benefits to the community, as established in the supporting statements submitted by the applicant and encouraged by Police Scotland.”
