Six months later: Union Terrace Gardens rapist is still at large

Police investigating the scene of the sex attack in Union Terrace Gardens last year.

Police are still hunting for a man who raped a young woman in an iconic spot in Aberdeen city centre – six months on.

The 21-year-old was targeted in Union Terrace Gardens in the early hours of January 28.

A major police investigation was launched, with specialist officers from a national rape investigation unit sent to assist police in Aberdeen.

Police have introduced a number of safety measures in and around the park since the incident, including plain-clothed patrols and CCTV.

But last night a police spokeswoman confirmed nobody had been charged in connection with the incident.

She said: “There are no further updates, inquiries are ongoing.”

Martin Greig, the chairman of the Aberdeen Community Safety Partnership, said it was disappointing the culprit had not been caught and urged anyone with information to come forward.

He said: “The police can be trusted to carry out the best possible investigation.

“It is disappointing that we have still not reached the stage of apprehending the criminal.

“Hopefully a member of the public can help by providing useful information that can lead to a detection.

“Someone somewhere will be able to help by identifying the wrongdoer.

“More feedback is needed to help solve this case.

“Effective policing depends on people cooperating by supplying reliable details about offences.

“If anyone can help they should come forward without delay.”

Previously, Detective Inspector Sheila McDerment said it would be a “challenging” case.

She said: “The case at Union Terrace Gardens is a particularly challenging investigation, but we have positive lines of inquiry we are following up.

“We want to send out a clear message rape and sexual crime will not be tolerated and we will do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.

“Our unit is aware of the complexities and sensitivities encountered by victims of serious sexual crimes.

She added: “We would still like to encourage anyone who was in the area of Union Terrace Gardens between 3am and 4am on

Thursday, January 28 and who may have seen something of concern to contact us.”

Anyone with information should call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
