A pair of cyclists are encouraging others to carry bin bags while out exercising.

Alexander ‘AJ’ Fyfe launched DoonThaBrae events while studying computer science at Robert Gordon University.

He set it up to run enduro mountain biking races, with the first event held at the Hill of Fare near Echt in autumn 2017.

While they have not been able to organise any races this year due to Covid-19, Mr Fyfe is still encouraging people to get out on their bikes.

Recently he and his partner Mhairi have noticed an increase in rubbish near their local roads and trails and have started carrying bin bags to help tackle the problem.

Mr Fyfe said: “As passionate mountain bikers, Mhairi and I are committed to encouraging others to take part in this fantastic form of outdoor activity.

Collecting litter at Counteswells Forest

“We believe it’s important we respect the fantastic countryside and wildlife in Aberdeenshire while we are out and about.

“Collecting litter, sadly discarded by folks who don’t care as much, is one practical way we can contribute to sustaining our wonderful natural environment.

“We hope others are inspired to do the same whilst there out and about.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in people going further outdoors which is great to see and hope it continues after lockdown eases.

“If just a few of them decide to do a litter pick we can all make the countryside a nicer place to visit.”

DoonThaBrae events hopes to run a variety of mountain biking races in Autumn, depending on Scottish Government advice.
