Police probe after Aberdeen dad-of-two dies in prison

Liam McCaig died in HMP Edinburgh

An Aberdeen dad-of-two has died in prison while serving five years for drug and firearms offences.

Liam McCaig, 26, passed away at HMP Edinburgh on June 11, the Scottish Prison Service said.

He was locked up after police discovered a replica revolver and £33,000 of cocaine at a garage in Dyce.

McCaig, who maintained his innocence throughout his trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, was found guilty in October 2019.

In a statement announcing his death, the SPS said: “Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers received a report of the sudden death of a 26-year-old man at a prison in Edinburgh at around 8.55am on Saturday June 11  2022.

“The death is being treated as non-suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

DNA evidence tied dad to drugs

The jury at McCaig’s trial heard how the gun and Class A drugs, along with a machete and knives, were found by police during a search of the garage in Berrywell Road on May 22 2018.

DNA and fingerprint evidence helped link McCaig to the crime scene.

McCaig insisted he was innocent and that he’d been set up by someone who bore a grudge against him.

Defence counsel Matt Jackson said at the time: “He maintains his innocence.”
