Man’s birthday night out ended with him smashing up Aberdeen University toilets

A man celebrated his 44th birthday by getting so intoxicated he “blacked out” and smashed up a toilet near Aberdeen University – causing £3,000 of damage.

Steven Gray, now 45, “blacked out” due to drugs he’d taken and had no recollection of wandering into a building site at Aberdeen University during the night.

But when a security guard heard strange noises coming from the site’s toilet block, he called the police.

When officers arrived they found Gray inside, along with a urinal and a tap which he’d ripped off the wall.

Fiscal depute Andrew McMann told Aberdeen Sheriff Court the incident happened around 10.20pm on May 10 2021.

He said a security guard at Aberdeen University was carrying out patrols when he spotted Gray walking into the Robertston construction site.

Gray ‘blacked out’

When he heard noises coming from the toilet block he contacted police.

Mr McMann said: “Police attended and found the accused within the toilet block alone.”

The court heard “substantial” damage was noted, amounting to £3,000 worth of repairs.

The damage saw a urinal and a tap ripped off the wall.

Gray, of Whitehouse Street, Aberdeen, pled guilty to wilfully or recklessly damaging the toilet block by unknown means.

Defence agent David Sutherland said: “He has taken steps, or continues to take steps to address the underlying drug misuse situation.

“That’s the explanation for the offence.”

Mr Sutherland said Gray has “no recollection” of the offences having “blacked out” at the time.

Sheriff Andrew Miller said: “This is clearly a very serious example of this type of offending.”

He ordered Gray to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and to be supervised for a year as a direct alternative to custody.
