The Royal Navy has confirmed that 23-year-old marine Andrew Dawes died in Monday's crash on the A9 at Aviemore.

The young serviceman killed in Monday’s pile-up on the A9 at Aviemore has been identified as a royal marine whose role was protecting Britain’s nuclear submarines.

Andrew Dawes, 23, had been serving with 43 Commando Fleet Protection Group at the Royal Navy’s Faslane base on the River Clyde.

He died from injuries he suffered in a collision involving a military vehicle, a car transporter, a lorry and a car, a mile south of the Granish junction on the north side of the village.

Five other people were treated at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness as a result of the accident.

A spokesman for the Navy said the thoughts and sympathies of the service were with Mr Dawes’ family and friends.

A further statement is expected from his commanding officer.

The crash was the third fatal collision in the Highlands and Islands within 72 hours.

Police inquiries into Monday’s crash are continuing.
