Car crash on the A95
Car crash on the A95

A cyclist who was killed when her bike collided with a lorry in the Highlands had just set off on a charity cycle from John O’ Groats to Lands End.

Anna Roots died when her bike and the articulated vehicle collided at Bettyhill in Sutherland, just 50 miles from her starting point.

Last night, Police Scotland revealed that the 34-year-old, who was from London, had travelled to the north of Scotland with a friend to embark on the 12-day bike ride to raise money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

The accident happened at 3.15pm on Saturday afternoon on the A836 between the village of Bettyhill and Thurso.

Meanwhile investigations are also ongoing into the death of 19-year-old Carl McPhee who was one of five people involved in a serious one-vehicle crash in South Uist on Saturday evening.

He died after the car left the road at Daliburgh on the island.

He was initially taken to Uist and Benbecula Hospital in Balivanich where he was found to have suffered internal injuries, including punctured lungs.

An air ambulance was called to move him to the mainland but he died before the transfer took place.

Yesterday, a police spokesman said: “Five males from within the vehicle were taken to Uist and Barra Hospital but sadly, as a result of his injuries from the collision, a 19-year-old man died.

“His next of kin have been informed.

“The other males within the vehicle, two aged 16 and one aged 19, were treated for minor injuries.

“A further 16-year-old male was treated for a minor head injury and was subsequently transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow for observations and later released.”

Mr McPhee was an apprentice engineer and played as a striker with Iochdar Saints in the Uist and Barra amateur league.

It is understood all five people in the crash were teammates with Iochdar Saints FC, who play in the Uist and Barra amateur league, and had been returning home from a match in Eriskay.

Another man who had to be cut free from a black Ford Fiesta which left the A95 between Dulnain Bridge and Grantown around 10pm on Saturday was yesterday said to be recovering in hospital in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

He was airlifted there following the incident but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A cyclist was taken to hospital after a collision with a car near a Western Isles school yesterday morning.

The accident happened on the A857 Stornoway-Port of Ness Road near Laxdale Primary School at 9.12am.

A police spokesman said that the injuries were not thought to be serious.

Elsewhere, two lorries were involved in a collision yesterday on the isle of Skye.

The accident happened on the A87 at Kyleakin near the Skye Bridge just after 2pm.

Police and ambulance attended.

It is believed that one of the drivers suffered minor injuries.
