Almost 50 operations due to have been carried out at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness this week have been cancelled due to a lack of beds.
The 400-bed hospital had to inform patients that planned non-emergency operations and day case procedures could not go ahead because its beds were full of people suffering from winter-related problems.
Regular bed assessments at the Inverness hospital result in a grading of red, amber or green, depending on the pressure on the available beds.
The situation was graded red on Monday and Tuesday, but it was downgraded to amber plus yesterday and it is now on amber.
An NHS Highland spokeswoman said no operations had been cancelled today and it is not expecting to cancel any tomorrow.
She said: “We have cancelled a total of 46 elective operations and day case procedures this week.
“Some of these have already been rebooked.”
Elective surgery is an operation scheduled in advance because it does not involve a medical emergency.
She added that staff had been working hard to minimise the disruption to patients and said the health board wished to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
