Two pupils from Milne’s High School in Fochabers have reached the finals in a national print competition.

Fighting off competition from 3000 pupils, Katie Kelly, 14, won the Best Poster Category for Scotland and Russell Morrison, 15, achieved runner up status in the PrintIT awards.

The students are in S3 and undertook the project as part of their commercial & industrial graphics class. They were tasked with producing a poster advertising a fair trade event to be held locally.

Pupils used their graphic and colour theory skills to produce thumbnail sketches of potential layouts for their posters then produced them on computers using Desk Top Publishing.

Katie said: “I was excited to go to London as it was a good opportunity. I’m happy to have won the award.

“I want to go in to science or medicine as a career but it opened my eyes to other career possibilities.

“As a prize I received a framed certificate and a digital camera.”

Russell said: “The task was to design a poster advertising a fairtrade event to be held locally.

“I created my one around the idea of a teapot.

“I didn’t expect to come runner up at all.

“I want to go into a career in architecture and I’ve chosen my fourth year subjects, one of which is graphic communication.”

Amy MacInnes, teacher of technology at Milne’s, said: “I’m very proud of the two students and their impressive work”

The awards were held at the Xerox Innovation Centre in London last week where the finalists were given a tour of the centre and allowed to play with technology.

The programme is part of the ProSkills Government led initiative to allow pupils to become more informed of the printing graphic industry and careers.
