Peterhead Scottish Week began with scores of locals turning out to watch the Buchan queen being crowned.
But the dire weather in the region meant a planned exhibition by the RAF Falcons had to be cancelled.
The parachute display team was scheduled to drop in on the Blue Toon at the Links on Saturday before the queen took her throne, but the team was unable to jump.
Crowds of locals still attended the event to watch the festivities as Fraserburgh Pipe Band heralded the arrival of the Buchan queen and princesses to their ceremony.
The trio will be at most of the Scottish Week events during the next 10 days and represent the community during the traditional celebrations.
However, there was great disappointment when the changeable Peterhead weather halted the big attraction.
Sergeant Mike Davies for the RAF Falcons had been testing the weather with members of the Scottish Week committee since 7am and had to deliver the unfortunate news.
He said: “Our jumpers need 2,500 feet without cloud and can do it in up to 20 knots – about 23mph winds.
“Unfortunately, after measuring the weather using our balloons, we are only getting 1,000 feet, so if we jumped, by the time we get out, we would be at the ground before we could do anything.
“So we’ve had to cancel the jump today.
“If we could delay it, we would have done, but we have an agreement that nothing flies over the area, so our space is time limited.
“Its a bit of a shame, but it can’t be helped.”
The committee alerted the public on Facebook, with many requesting the Falcons to return another day, but organisers confirmed that due to their schedule, that option was not viable.
Undaunted, hundreds of people flocked to the Links to watch the spectacle as Flight Lieutenant Mikaela Harrison from the Falcons crowned the Buchan girls.
Committee chairwoman Karen Day said the “manic” launch had been an incredible start for the group and they are excited for the 200 events planned for Scottish Week.
She said: “Today I’ve learned so much – I can tell you about clouds, about the balloons the Falcons use to measure the weather and I can tell you every prayer in the prayer book, but we can’t change the weather.
“We have worked so hard to pull everything together and we are only a committee of 11 volunteers.
“The community has come together today and shown that, despite the weather, we can still pull together and celebrate the last traditional Scottish Week in Scotland.”
