With people across the country celebrating International Dog Day today, this photo gallery celebrates Aberdeen’s connections to man’s best friend.
From greyhound racing to charity work, these pups have been involved in all sorts of events and occasions in the city.
These images from our archives remind us of some of our favourites.
So join us for a trip down memory lane as we celebrate some beloved memories with our four-legged friends from across the Granite City.
Rescue racing dogs
One of the major concerns of Mr George Letts, manager of Aberdeen Stadium, was to ensure that although greyhound racing at the stadium was doomed, the dogs were not doomed too.
He was determined to source homes for all of his animals, including these three alert faces!
Don’s Black, Banner Candy, and Dear Friend are pictured here at the Old Dairy greyhound kennels on Altens Road in Nigg.
The kennels at Holburn Stadium looked after some 70 dogs who were all rehomed when it closed in October 1969.
Aberdeen Dog Show
The Aberdeen Dog Show in 1972 was well attended by pooches from all over the Granite City determined to win a prize.
It was Scottish terrier Aberscot Gillsie Bon Accord who managed to secure Best Dog in Show.
Here he is with professional handler Mr Fred Sills.
Proud owner Mrs Iain Fraser, from Pitfodels, looks on.
Aberdeen’s first dog warden
Moira Adams was appointed the city’s first ever dog warden in 1975.
Moira’s job involved rounding up stray dogs and taking them to a pound in Seaton.
Here she is with her own two dogs, Tanya and Sheba, who are leading by example on how well-behaved dogs should be!
Kessock Bridge’s watchdog
The Kessock Bridge was firmly guarded by watchdog Kessock in the 1980s.
He was looked after by security man Mr Ronnie Barr.
Both are pictured here guarding the approaches to the bridge.
Bon Accord Kennel Club Show
Fiona Waldie, of Bridge of Don, had her hands full with her two charges at the Bon Accord Kennel Club Show in July 1986.
Melarter Niall, the wolfhound, bravely guards his owner and Daisy the wire-haired dachshund.
What a gentle giant!
Victoria Park walks
It’s hard work walking a dog like Snowy, especially when you are only 3!
So Ian Nicoll took advantage of the fine morning in Victoria Park, Aberdeen, to rest awhile.
Snowy, a Samoyed, prefers to stand.
Ring Craft Club’s Halloween party
Members of the newly-formed Ring Craft Club got together to celebrate Halloween in 1988.
It was the presence of their furry friends that really made it a night to remember!
Here are the club members and their dogs pictured in fancy dress at the Aberdeen Exhibition Centre.
Can you recognise anyone under those costumes?
Top dog at Turriff Show
He’s the top dog!
The Reserve Best Puppy in the show was this handsome and intelligent-looking golden retriever, Robbie.
The canine champion is pictured with his extremely proud owner, Mrs Yvonne Robertson from Aberdeen.
Look at the size of that trophy!
Doggy fundraisers
Bearded Collie Scotia takes a break from helping his mistress, Mrs Ailsa Gill, collect money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
The £3,000 raised during the previous year’s appeal paid for Nicholas (right) to be trained.
Here they both are outside the St Nicholas Centre with their owners in 1990.
What a good Samaritan!
Guide dog visit
The 1st Kintore Brownies raised money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in 2004.
They were rewarded for their efforts with a visit from trainee guide dog, Luke!
The 12-week-old pup was brought in to greet them at their meeting spot in Gordon.
Westie convention
The West Highland convention was held at Aberdeen’s Duthie Park in 2014.
These four Westies look positively dashing in their bright red tartan jackets.
Dogs Mac, Hamish, Jock, and Robbie did their breed proud.
Here’s to many more years of fun with man’s best friend in the Granite City.
