Aberdeen FC: Robson ‘more than ready’ for another season

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes says Barry Robson has shown he is more than ready for another year at Pittodrie.

The 36-year-old may be in the twilight of his career but McInnes is convinced the former Celtic and Middlesbrough player still has plenty to offer.

Robson’s current deal expires at the end of the season but the midfielder has been offered a one-year extension, which McInnes expects the player to sign.

He said: “That is more or less agreed.

“When Barry first came here two years ago, he didn’t come for a lot of money. His motivation was to play for Aberdeen.

“He actually earned less again last year and he is earning less again next season.

“He has shown in the last two or three months a level of performance that has helped make that decision.

“There is still a place in football for experience.

“Everyone wants young players with energy but in key games this season we could have done with a bit more experience.

“We have been without Russell Anderson and Barry for long periods.

“I still think there is a place for experience in the day-to-day working of your club and Barry still thinks he has a role to play.

“His desire to play for Aberdeen has always been there. It has never been about finance.

“That has helped things along and his recent performances have helped him earn that new deal.”

McInnes, meanwhile, is hoping for an improved display from his side when they face St Johnstone in the final game of the season.

The Dons came from behind to draw 1-1 at Dundee on Saturday and the Dons manager accepted his players were not at their best.

He said: “It was fiercely contested as it always is against Dundee. There was no quarter given.

“I thought both sets of players put plenty of endeavour into the match.

“I was disappointed we never made more of our set-pieces, as we had plenty of them, or produced more quality in the final third.

“One or two players missed an opportunity to prove they should have been playing more.

“It wasn’t a great performance and we expect better but it wasn’t a poor performance, either.”
